Leather Contingent Planning Continues

Photo of Leather Contingent in 2022 Pride Parade by David Hyman

All members of the kink community are invited to help plan and march with the Leather Pride Contingent in the Pride Parade on Sunday, June 30, 2024.

Here are some things you can do to help make the Leather Contingent the high point of the Parade:

    • On Saturday, June 1, at 1:00pm, attend the Contingent’s Parade Planning Meeting, at the SF Eagle.
    • Start talking to your friends about the Parade, and get them to commit to joining the Leather Contingent!
    • Sign up as a volunteer:

Other things to know:

    • The contingent will be led by five Contingent Marshals:

      • Star D. Love, Non-binary Leather Marshal
      • AJ Huff, Rubber Marshal
      • Jamal Pup Savage, Pup Marshal

      • a Whip team led by Danny Nguyen;
      • A Color Guard (contact Cal Callahan for more info);
      • A Sound Truck, with Mark Paladini announcing;
      • The huge Leather Pride Flag, which needs 22 volunteers to carry it;
      • Pony Carts;
      • A whole lot of enthusiastic marchers having a great time!
    • Volunteers will also be needed on Saturday, June 29, to decorate the truck.
    • Please contact robert@sfbunny.com with questions
    • Remember, if you are going to be a Contingent Monitor, you should BOTH register with Pride, and sign up with the Contingent.
    • The Leather Contingent will be Group SFL107, but we won’t know our position in the parade until “the last minute”.  Watch the Leather Contingent Facebook Page for info on when and where to show up.

See you at the parade!

Leather Alley at Pride 2024

San Francisco Pride and Folsom Street will join forces to present The Root of Pride, the Adults Only area for the 2024 Beacon of Love Celebration.

The San Francisco Bay Area Leather Alliance is back with Leather Alley — a walled off area within that adults-only section of Pride, open only on Sunday June 30, 2024.

Leather Alley is the Alliance’s biggest fundraiser, helping them to produce the Mr. and Mx. San Francisco Leather contests.  The Alley also helps educate and entertain a broader Pride audience.

The Alliance invites all local leather and kink organizations to host a booth at this year’s Leather Alley!  Tables, chairs, water and snacks will be provided.  Participation by non-profit organizations is free, but donations to cover costs will be gladly accepted.

They also invite folks to demo their kink skills on the Leather Alley Stage. Small stipends available for performers.

Volunteers to work a shift (e.g. accepting donations at the Alley entrance) are also being sought.

New Park Updates

We are very excited about the new Park that is being constructed by the City at Natoma and 11th Street, just a few feet north of the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District.

Proposed eleventh and Natoma new park aerial view of existing buildings

The new park will include a half-basketball court, fitness area, children’s play area, tables and seating throughout.  It will offer folks a respite from the dense, urban environment, among lush plantings.

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department solicited community input into naming the park, and we proposed that the park be named after Rachele Sullivan, one of the founders of our Cultural District and a prominent figure in SOMA’s Filipino community.

Several other names were proposed, including options to honor various representatives of the Leather, Filipino, and Disabled communities.

In two rounds of community surveys, Rachele Sullivan’s name emerged as the clear favorite, garnering more votes than all other options combined.

We believe that honoring Rachele Sullivan is a profoundly good choice, as she was a woman who proudly embodied the intersection of the queer, leather, Filipino, Indigenous, and disabled communities.

The final naming decision will be made by the Recreation and Park Commission.  At this time, we do not know when the hearing and vote will take place. (June 20, 2024 is one possible date.)  Please watch this page and/or join our SOMA Action Network, and we will let you know when and if your presence or other advocacy is needed.

Golden Dildeaux Awarded

The Woodys Awards Ceremony was held at the San Francisco Eagle on the evening of April 27, and the nominees, along with their friends and supporters, filled the Eagle patio to enjoy the finale of the Golden Dildeaux Award season, and to see who would get a Woody.

2024 GOLDEN DILDEAUX AWARDS by Fire Dragon Photo

Hosts Dolan Wolf and Andres Campos carefully read the lists of nominees, and cheers greeted each award winner as they came forward to receive their statuettes, each accompanied by a golden envelope and a certificate confirming their victory.

District 6 Supervisor Matt Dorsey and Cultural District Director Bob Goldfarb contributed comments and drag performer Coco Buttah provided entertainment during breaks in the awards.

After all the awards were presented (see list of winners, below), a special additional Woody was given to Ben Perez for being the most successful fundraiser in a single category.

Overall, the 2024 Golden Dildeaux raised $14,877 for the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District, which will be used to help keep SOMA kinky and queer.

The award celebration capped weeks of active and imaginative campaigning by nominees, leading to some spirited friendly competitions, and resulting in a diverse and enthusiastic group of award recipients.
